Boycott The Scouting News

April 3, 2008

Google “Boycott The Scouting News”

Wow, have you Googled “The Scouting News” or “Boycott The Scouting News” lately? We have literally surrounded and out-flanked the lecherous, predatory Ron Holmes, aka “Benny” with our virtual army of parents, players and coaches who reject his practices of preying on kids and posing as a hockey insider who can affect the future of promising prospects. When this boycott started, the publisher of The Scouting News thought he could call coaches and even existing parent-subscribers and influence them to blacklist or socially isolate the children of parents who called his bluff. If this is your first time visiting this site, that may sound like a far-fetched claim, but as you read the articles and comments of parents and coaches contained on this site, you will realize that a critical mass of support for the Boycott was reached last year. Essentially, people were fed up with the deception and manipulation The Scouting News used to suit its perverted purposes. Today, you cannot Google the Scouting News without seeing the Boycott right next to it! Today, the internet reach and pageviews of the Scouting News are at their lowest levels since the insipid rubbish rag debuted.

Scouting News Numbers Near Zero!

Wow! Pageviews down 80% over the last 3 months! That’s enormous. Thanks to conscientious adults who value truth and integrity above seeing their children’s names mentioned on a supposed authoritative web site, the Boycott has spread like wildfire. Parents and coaches fed up with a man who spams and floods internet forums with annoying solicited testimonials from deparate, though well-meaning parents and children. Parents and children who have trusted him with their pictures and stories who had been fooled into thinking that the publicity might help them obtain better hockey opportunities have discovered that no reputable coach or scout cares what The Scouting News writes and no reputable journalist would contribute content to a publication so plagued with incompetence and so lacking in integrity. Just look at the teeny tiny lines in the bottom right corner of the traffic graph below. Their stats haven’t been this low since they opened the site. Have you noticed all of the promotions they’ve been offerring lately to get new subscribers? This is why…

Scouting News Going Out of Business

That’s a clear indication that people have had enough of The Scouting News. Each year another group of Pee Wees and Bantams will hear the Pied Piper’s tune luring them to send in their pictures, stories, and money. Until the Scouting News apologizes publicly and affirms in writing that it will discontinue its predatory and disparaging polcies, the Boycott will live on, continually tightening its virtual grip until eventually, the Scouting News will realize the futility of continuing its operations.

  1. Keep up the great work.

The Scouting News takes aim at 10 to 13 year old kids. I have seen only 2 results of their work. 1. pumping them full false hope (to lure the parents money in) or 2. feelings of failure (that have meant the end of a kids hockey playing days, at 12).

There is no room in this world for internet money making scams like thios, that solicit and prey on minors, let alone Ron Holmes, an unproven, illiterate, hockey-expert-wannabe.

  2. Hillarious! The Scouting News is so desperate, they’re offerring 3 years for the price of one. They must really be in dire straits. How about the latest backpedalling on the NTDP picks? They’re always bragging about how accurate they are, then their picks get panned and now they say it’s “curious.” Yes, curious that anyone would give a rats butt what the Scouting News thinks. No way they’re gettin any of my money.

  3. I also had a horrible experience with TSN when I kept getting requests for info on my son (8 in one month) and they never bothered to profile him. When I emailed and asked why, I got an absurd, abusive response from the guy who told me how he could ruin my son’s name. The guy is nuts and REALLY paranoid. He suggested I ask hockey people around the country about his publication and how powerful it is, and when I did, naturally no one thought anything of it. Too bad there isn’t a legit website that isn’t out to make and break our kids

  4. The Scouting News tries to pressure you – they only name they can ruin is their own. They tried the same BS with me. They said they would ruin his carreer and my reputation, and damned if they didn’t actually try. The end result is that my son played on one of the best teams in country, drafted high in the Canadian Hockey League, made the team and is doing very well there. If your son can play, nobody’s going to pay any attention to what this nut says.

  5. To Whom it May Concern,
I have been using the website for a few years. I am directly involved with hockey.
    I can conclude 3 things:
    1) I have seen and used very useful info on the site for the scouting and ranking of Bantam and Midget aged players, most of it insightful and accurate from the various opinions offered.
2)I see no problem with potential high end players having a medium to get their name and profile out to the hockey world
    3) I can understand how some people can be upset if they do not get the exposure they want, thus some people may have hard feelings with the website.

I will continue to use the site.

If people have a legitimate complaint about The Scouting News, why are they posting anonymously. Putting a name to their complaint when bringing it forward to the public is the best way.
If there is a problem, then it should be dealt with. Anonymous accusations will never bring serious attention.
If my post is deleted, I would be lead to believe this site must have alterior or hidden motives.

    Dear L. Allen Shaw,

Don’t worry, many kids get all the exposure they need. But it’s because they’re good players – not because they were mentioned by the “Scouting Nazi.” People are viewing and commenting anonymously on this blog because the Scouting Nazi blacklists them and their kids, calls their coaches & team parents to complain and intimidate. If that’s what you want to support, we’re happy to publish your name right along with theirs. You’re the one who should get in the closet because no sane hockey parent would ever knowingly let his get work with anyone who truly believes the Scouting News is legitimate for anything more than bathroom wipes.

If you’re a strength and conditioning coach, your comment makes it clear that you’re only talking about muscles. Conditioning of character and intellect are also important to many parents, and you are plainly not qualified to teach from that perspective. You’re missing the point of this Boycott and I urge you to read more. We don’t have a problem with what the content of TSN, we have a problem with the blacklisting and other mean-spirited, vindictive responses of one man to ANY criticism of his very questionable content. He has the right to say a kid is good or bad or borderline or anything else. But when someone disagrees, esepcially on the internet, he goes after them with a fanaticism that is pathological. That’s what we are against. He tries to silence the speech and opinion of others when it is not flattering or supportive. Yes, his rag is tired, recycled, manipulative, rubbish, and we feel he has every right to peddle it. He, on the other hand, does not feel we or anyone else should have the right to express our opinion similarly. That, my friend, is why the Boycott began and why it will continue until The Scouting Nazi publishes an apology on his front page.

  6. Admittedly I have not seen the things that you accuse him of, so I may not be the appropriate person to defend the accusations.

    You wrote:

    My response:
Any credibility you could have had with me is now greatly diminished.
No need to slam me for stating an opinion. I have worked (and will continue to work with) NHL and CHL hockey players, state/provincial national and world champion strength athletes.

I did not slam you or your cause, I simply offered unbiased insight from my personal experience.

I am now sorry that I offered an opinion.
It is obvious that a person with 22 years experience of helping young as well as professional athletes reach their goals has no merit with you.
Please delete my previous post as well as my personal name and info from your web page.
I do not wish to be associated in any way with you or your cause.

    Thank you.

  7. I posted a non biased comment.

You then slammed me by saying….
“You’re the one who should get in the closet because no sane hockey parent would ever knowingly let his get work with anyone who truly believes the Scouting News is legitimate for anything more than bathroom wipes.”

You and your blog can carry on doing what you do.

    I didnt beg.
And to add, the only error I made was offering an honest opinion on your web site. I should have known better than to offer an opinion on this type of medium.

I still stand on my original thoughts…… If you think Ron Holmes or whom ever the guy is called is doing the things you say…. and that he is a nobody…. then people should stand up. Obviously there is something amiss…. if anyone slandered or attempted to damage one of my childrens future, I would have done alot more than post anonymously on an internet blog.

    • Ok, Mr. Shaw. Put up or shut up. Ron Holmes and the Scouting News are continuing a campaign of cyber terror against children. You call yourself a coach and you say if anyone sladered or attempted to damage one of your childrens future you would do “a lot more than post anonymously on an internet blog.” Well, if you consider the kids you coach your children, I assure you that Holmes will (if he hasn’t already) make every attempt to tarnish their images if their parents say anything contrary to his interests. Read the comments on this blog from other parents, and smell the coffee “Coach.” I find it hard to believe any true coach of hockey who still lives above ground has not heard of TSN and its antics. If you really are a coach, put up or shut up. Stand up for your kids, our kids, and all kids who play the game. Join the Boycott. Boycott the Scounting News, don’t renew your membership, and tell everyone you know to do the same.
