Boycott The Scouting News

Resource for Scouts or Brag Rag for Parents?

While The Scouting News claims to be a resource for scouts and coaches, its credibility is continually damaged by its own words and practices. The Boycott Forum recently called them on their “tip sheets” which they claim are compiled from calls for information by college, pro, and junior coaches. In the same article, they appeal to kids who want to be added to the list asking them to fill out a “free form.” If any player can submit himself to the list, how valuable can it really be to teams looking for the best players? This kind of semantic gymnastics is par for The Scouting News and fairly representative of the deceit employed in their business practices. Ever wonder how much of their revenue comes from scouting staffs vs players’ parents? You can bet its heavily lop-sided in favor of parents. If you want to pay to read online what you or your child has written, that’s certainly your prerogative, but if you think you’re paying to get scoop from legitimate decision-makers, you are mistaken. The Boycott takes issue with the Scouting News not because of its content, but precisely because of its persistent deceptive practices. Cancel your subscription now and don’t renew, even if they offer you 90 days free. The Boycott is working and people are getting the message that giving Ron “Benny” Holmes their money only supports fraudulent, predatory, and discriminatory business practices which do more to hurt kids than to help them.

  2. The Scouting News needs to take care of the many flaws within their own literature before they are seen in the public eye as the respected minor hockey authority they make themselves out to be.

From the N54 ‘1992 Draft Lists thread:
    January 24 2008, 1:28 AM
When they can’t spell the best player at this age groups name right Catenacci not Cantenacci, underagers like Campagna are listed as a 93, names like DiNallo, Palazese, Chevriere are not on the list and names that shouldn’t be are, I question the validity of this list.

    …………..

    Then from the SN site;
    January 24 2008, 3:00 PM
For example: spelling the name of the number one ranked prospect in Canada Daniel Catenacci as Cantenacci is not a smart PR excercise! One has to wonder how nationally top twenty ranked 1994 born Matthew Campagna ended up on the leagues 1993 list? Where are top two round ranked OHL class of 2009 prospects like Chevrier and Dinallo? “

SO, WHERE IS SN GETTING THERE INFO FROM???

    WHO ARE THEIR SCOUTS?

YOU ARE, I AM, WE ALL ARE !!!

    REGURITATED VOMIT? ABSOLUTELY

    SAVE YOUR DOUGH

The only real articles with any substance on SN are when bashing the work of others. The player articles themselves are lacking of any real meat and potatoes journalism.

    Example;

    The hook:
The SN sat down with John Milligan the other day. Find out what he had to say about player prospects like Offset, Bester and Fraizze.

    The line:
    BUT 1st – SIGN UP AND PAY $199, then you’ll get a subscription for 1 year !!!
    What a deal !!!

    The sinker:
    Name: John Milligan
Team: Wanton Flyers Minor Pee Wee
    Favorite Food: Pasta
    Favorite Pastime: Comic Books

Top 5 Players in your league:
    Mike Offset – skates well
    Dave Cameron – shoots well
    Shawn Bester – checks well
Nick Munster – blocks shots well
    Dominic Fraizze – passes well

    and

That subcription – can only be used from one computer and one location. If that computer breaks down – too f’in bad ! If you want to access the site from your hotel room – too f’in bad, if you are school and want to see “new news” too f’in bad. We’ll ban you from the site and post your name under the abusers list !! And if you disagree with any article, too f’in bad. We’ll ban you and never promote you again.

    …………..
SN PR – The humor in this thread is that you call out a free USHL list for its spelling errors, and then rely on N54 to point out your own in the very same article. Your us of “excercise” this morning is just one exaple, but you still have hundreds of other errors, including the ones pointed out in this thread. Guzik’s name is certainly not Kaspir or Kasper, so figure it out. We all understand your motives, as they are so transparent – money. Unfortunately the value that you bring to the table, which is a bunch of self-promoted pieces by players and other gossip can be obtained at any hockey pub, rink or N54 for free, or at most for a cost of one beer.

So what did bashing USHL list do for SN? It brought on SN bashing, so I guess the saying “live by sword, die by sword” is true.

  4. Just wanted to add my two bits on this post. For those of you who have been led to believe that the SN has a whole staff of scouts, this could not be farther from the truth. The guy is a one man show who does’nt even live in North America. He’s a clown that is spending daddy’s money on this goofy site and pays to have a couple of washed up scouts who think they know what they are talking about. I will leave you with this…the message boards get shut down every year just before spring, stating that there are to many negative comments. Every year he does this, he claims that the boards are never to be opened again. He then comes out with a new miraculous system that can track all the negative posters, just in time for the new season to start and then re-opens the boards…this folks is how he gets his info on the kids that are showing well for that perticular year. He gathers his info through the message boards…this guy is dangerous to your kids confidence and don’t buy into it.

  5. What I find sooo amusing is that with their projected list of 2008 Draft prospects…if their prediction is close or correct, they applaud themselves and if a player is drafted out of their order (ie someone they predict farther down the list is selected alot higher) they slag the player…very poor in my books. Nothing like knocking the chair right out from under the kids feet!
